The one and only Van der Graaf Generator tape I own is Pawn Hearts. It was recommended to be as a good place to start with them. I like, but do not love.

The only album I have is Godbluff (1975) and I think it's pretty fucking fantastic.

To continue the mind set of this thread, the only album I have is H to He, which is a very complex slice of Prog.

heh, same here. one album is the saturation point with these guys apparently. I remember liking H to He but I was getting burned out on prog at the time.

My dad was trying to get me into these guys, but I never bit. I think I was at a point where I was burned out on prog myself. Someday I shall return.

I was never hugely into Van der Graaf Generator, but H to He, Pawn Hearts and Godbluff are all pretty solid albums. (Guy Evans, what a fantastically underrated drummer!) The Long Hello Vol. 1 (1974) is also worth checking out if you just want to hear the instrumentalists strut their stuff without any of Peter Hammill's vocal melodramatics. There are several other volumes of Long Hello, but I haven't heard any of them...
