Hallelujah!
Five years after there was last word from this outstanding band, Sgt. Sunshine is on the cusp of releasing a new album. Singer/ guitarist Eduardo Fernandez has dropped some solo tracks & sketches here and there since then, that used to pop up on MySpace, his Facebook profile, but no official releases. Well glory be, the original trio that created the magic that was the first Sgt. Sunshine self-titled album from 2003 (Eduardo, Par Hallgren, Christian "Kricke" Lundberg), which sadly is nearly impossible to find now, are back in action and will be releasing another album before the end of this year, likely titled III, likely on Elektrohasch Records. Having heard a wee bit of what's to come, the unique, righteous grooves that made the first record so special are back. Black Hole I also came to love over time, but that first album always has a special place in my heart. Thanks be to the heavens Sgt. Sunshine is coming back with more very soon...

Awesome news! I just assumed they were done, especially after the reception that Black Hole seemed to get.

Well for a while they were finished (or on indefinite hiatus at least). 2004 is when the original trio went separate ways and 2007's Black Hole was obviously with two other guys (plus Eduardo). I know the second album wasn't received like the first, it hit me differently too. But over the years I came to love the record, appreciating the different animal they'd created. Drummer Kricke came back into the fold late last year followed by bassist Par this year. I'm psyched beyond belief they're all back together...

I knew about the personnel changes, and while I own Black Hole, I really don't listen to it very often but the other one is a regular on my iTunes. I need to pull it down again.

But yes, definitely. Esp with the OG lineup.

Totally you should. I'll confess there are still a couple tracks in there that don't do anything for me, but others are purely essential. 'Mar Borrascosa' offhand is one. 'Monte Azul' is yet another. Deliciousness on the third record lays ahead...

So... not to put my 'foot in mouth' either way it goes, but since there's no coverage on Elektrohasch's site yet, this may be late November or December it sees the light. But regardless of delay, which I'll bet my life won't be a Colour Haze She Said or Solace A.D. scenario, it will be worth the wait indeed. What I've heard from III absolutely smokes- that tasty, unique "2 Swedes and a Cuban" feast of swinging groove, warm psych-licks, and a gumbo of sound that this guy thinks sounds like no one else. There it is.

Addendum:
To clarify quickly, both Solace and Colour Haze records were well worth the delay, I only meant the Sgt. Sunshine album shouldn't be delayed like those two were.

I actually just got myself a copy of Sgt Sunshine s/t on wax.

Never cared much for the second album, another with the original lineup though... this is sure to demolish.

It's supposed to be out, right?... Am I just looking in the wrong places or uh, what's going on here?

Thanks, good to hear.

Took me years to track down a copy of their first album. I'm not going through that again.

Yeah it's weird what happened with that record, and such a fucking good one. I may be wrong, but I believe the British label Abstact Sounds, that handled the first record, went under. Then a Hong Kong-based label handled a tiny quantity of reissues which disappeared fast. It's great that Elektrohasch put out a vinyl version...

Well yeah, but even the vinyl version doesn't show up too often anymore.

The last couple to hit eBay have been roughly a year apart.

No I didn't mean to imply the vinyl was an easy find either, other than I was happy a vinyl version existed and I bought one in time. That being said, "III" will be out on both CD & Vinyl on Elektrohasch (the CD in 2 days, don't know when we can expect the vinyl).

No, stormzsystem? I guess I didn't do a good enough job plugging it in these forums then. I've been trying to hype (not in the bad way) Sgt. Sunshine's righteous return, just cause I'm so fucking elated they are indeed back. A proper release, a proper label, CD, LP, special edition LP, fuck yeah. I hope they can do some touring of the continent over there and spread the good word. Sgt. Sunshine rules, yes they do...

I haven't received my copy yet (ordered last week). They had some songs in the old line up on myspace like 5 years ago and they sounded nice enough already. I hope III will be a return to the sound of the first album. Blue vinyl is sold out already @ elektrohasch as of today.

Fans of the first album need fear little, new album is the same band- Eduardo, Kricke and Par. I remember what you mean 'cyr', they had up on MySpace all those years ago, among others, the new(er) tune 'Beneath The Song', which will be on the new record too. And yeah that demo version was already killer. Those special editions of III went already? Glad I bought one the day they went up.

The Black Hole album gets too much of a slagging from people, considering 2/3rd's of the band were different guys, and I'd heard they weren't even going to call it Sgt. Sunshine given how different it was, but naming the band Black Hole instead, and not just the album. There really are great songs on it, for those inclined to give it another set of spins.

Well yes Beneath The Song is one of these 'myspace' tracks. Others I have are 2 cover songs called Fresh Tendrills (soundgarden) and When The Levee Breaks (zep).

I agree about black hole though. It's not bad at all but not what I expected/wanted to hear from Eduardo+2 after the demos, promo, s/t. It's got this different feeling all over it.
