Was perusing Amazon earlier tonight and stumbled upon this. Supposedly it's remastered? I listened to a couple samples on iTunes and it doesn't all that different to me. Maybe a little more clear, but it still sounds like the lo-fi wall of sound of the original. Has anyone heard this in full and can provide a better comparison of the sound between the two? I actually grew to like the production and mastering of the original mix and am hoping they didn't tinker with it too much.

Also found out Dopesmoker received similar treatment. Any comments on the remastering job on this as well?

I suggest using the search function, here and on the internet in general. The Dopesmoker reissue has been discussed to death. The AoSD reissue isn't out yet.

I did search, and no one here has made with comments about how the remasters compare to the originals. Which is what I want to know. Thanks for the snark, though.

And the AoSD reissue has been out since July 31st according to the link I included that leads to a page where you can buy it.

I'd like to put these on my headphones and go walk between the lakes around until they're on me, then sit somewhere and wait for them to come close so I can kick their asses. or not, they'd rip me apart at the waist. but with this music maybe they better keep their distance or I'll knock them on their ass.

I thought it was just a pretty straight port of the Tee Pee version of Dopesmoker, but I could be wrong. Not sure on Art of Self Defense.

not buying overpriced reissues cuz it seems too gimmic to me. what i heard is that the cd's don't sound to different but the vinyl sounds lots better which kinda makes sense since teepee's known for making lots of cheap sounding vinyl

Thanks for the heads up. Bought on amazon. 48 page book of photos is a nice touch, but finally hearing the three demo recordings was what I was after. Yeah, I've already got the first 6 tracks, twice over, and the bonus tracks, once, thank you teepee, but I'll never find that demo for a nice price, and seeing as how High On Fire is my favorite band and subsequently this my favorite album of all time (going on, what, 13 years now since I first heard it...), I figured I might as well cough up the 15 and get a brand spanking new 3rd edition. It'll probably sound as different to my ears as the dopesmoker reish, which was, lessee, less than minimal, but fuck it, this album still owns my life, and I'll finally get to complete my high on fire discography with the demo tracks...this makes 9 CDs that i'll own by them, 1 less than fucking Pentagram and come to think of it one more than sabbath (they lost me after the first 8).

Whatever. Some of us will buy it, some won't. Who gives a shit, just more swag from a fucking righteous band.

Shit, I don't even have "Dopesmoker". It's been the "Jerusalem" version for me since I got it back in 2001 or whenever the hell that was. As for AOSD, I have the original (Man's Ruin) version of that, too. I'm not big on reissues and remasters...the only two that I would consider are Torche's first album and Lo-Pan's "Sasquanaut", because I heard tell they cleaned up those albums. And as good as they both are already, it may be worth it, since in general I get more sick of muddy sound all the time. Getting older, by God.

I was at a record store earlier today and they had the AOSD reissue there. Listened to it but wasn't getting a huge difference from it on that one quick spin. Didn't end up buying it.

No, 100% the Southern Lord reissue with the new packaging, cool inlet, etc. I am not saying that there was no differences, and I am 100% positive the more I listened to it the more the differences would become apparent. Just saying on one quick, rushed listen the differences weren't that significant and not enough to get me to buy it.

As much as I love Anderson's work on AOSD it never sounded that great on headphones, IMO...the remastered version sounds infinitely better, especially slower tracks like "10,000 Years" where you can better distinguish Rice's bass playing from Pike's riffs...the remastered version also features greater drum clarity w/o sacrificing any of the heft or sounding artificial...as a HoF diehard who never gave much thought to tampering w/ Anderson's work, I'm glad I got it.

I'll get it on vinyl for sure since I don't own it on any medium...it looks great, and I'm sure it sounds that way too.

Interesting...can't justify the expense for this right now but might have to just go for it in the future and check this out more thoroughly.

I'm definitely going to look into the AoSD reissue. I don't have the songs anywhere because I was 12 when it came out. A little too young to have found and exposed myself to what I now consider one of the greatest bands I've ever heard. I've listened to all the songs on Y/T a thousand times and tried to find a place to buy it, but everywhere I've seen it online costs like $55 (I don't live anywhere near a store that would carry it). That said, I'm pretty excited to be able to own this thing finally.

Fuck yeah, easily. I'm happy with my original copy, but I guess jumping on this would be a prudent course of action. My remasters of AC/DC, Judas Priest and Pink Floyd all worked out well to my advantage, I would say.

Just got the Art of Self Defense reissue. Since my Tee Pee LP is thin and overplayed and my Man's Ruin CD has gone missing this seemed like a good idea. It was a great idea for $14, the increase in volume and definition in the overall sound has improved enough for me to take notice and feel like its 12 years ago again and my mind is beyond blown this time.

Finally got to spin my Dopesmoker DLP last night. Had it for the last month but my receiver was fucked. Sounds great, definitely a bit cleaner/clearer than the mp3s of the Tee Pee version I had. Also listened to my old copy of The Art of Self Defence, won't be getting the reissue.

anyone knows which european distros hold these releases (or any southern lord releases)? I've only found them on http://www.normanrecords.com/ , and these are in english pounds so it's a bit expensive...I've would much rather pay in euros.

I really like Kozmik Artifactz: http://www.kozmik-artifactz.com/shop/index.php?language=en

They do not yet seem to have the HoF re-release, but they have Dopesmoker (although it is 35 euros). But generally they have great releases and pretty good prices in my opinion.
