I know this will be an extremely divisive story and will split people down the middle. But apparently it is moving ahead. Years ago I said to myself Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000) would be a great candidate for a Jimi Hendrix biopic. Saw an article yesterday that said he is indeed playing Hendrix in a film called All Is By My Side that is to tell the story of Hendrix's pre-fame years. It'll be out in 2013. In terms of pure look alone, Andre 3000 does bear a close resemblance to Hendrix, I'll say that. I don't know if he can play guitar, but he is a talented dude. I'll totally give that movie a shot.

Be curious to know if the Hendrix estate is backing this one, and thus, allow the production to use his music or not...

This has definitely been in the works for at least a couple years. The idea of a forty year old (okay 37) dude playing a twenty year old dude kind of weirds me out, but not as much as pushing-50 Mike Myers as Kieth Moon would have. I'm sure I'll catch it on "Movieplex" or whatever that channel is called in like six years and be ambivalent about it. Or maybe even mildly interested. I'm looking forward to sort of liking this movie, long after the hype has died!

I love Hendrix, but i'm glad he's not around today. Dude would be playing progressive jazz in pleated slacks.

There's no way a relatively high profile project like this would push forward without Experience Hendrix's blessing (Jimi's sister who's been successful at completely overtaking all Jimi content in recent years...)
I'd be somewhat interested in this..."somewhat" being the key word.

Yeah. It's apparently taken this long to come to fruition though.

As far as the age things goes,,, Jimi was 27 when he kicked off and it isn't like Andre is an old looking 37 or whatever he is. Val Kilmer pretty much nailed the Jim Morrison depiction with about that much of an age discrepancy. And Kilmer physically changed himself to depict the young and fatter/older Morrison. It still kind of blows me away to think about how much he nailed that, and that film is over 20 years old now.

If Andre is playing "pre-fame" Hendrix, he'd be more like 20, which is an almost 20 year difference. Kilmer was probably thirty playing Morrison in his early 20s. But, hey, if Tom Cruise can look like a thirty something rocker in a musical comedy box office bomb, then by all means, Andre may be fresh enough of a vegetable to mutter and puff his way through the latest dead rocker Hollywood biopic.

I had high hopes for Jimi's estate when Alan Douglas was ousted, there's been some great music releases, but overall it has become a money making machine for Janie.
They could do some great things with archived recordings (much like was done by the Grateful Dead with the "from the vault" series) I wish they would choose that route, One can never have too much quality Hendrix.
