That's before I was really whole hog into that stuff. I was listening to Kyuss and Sleep but I was but a novice in the study of stoner rock. Closest thing to a stoner rock fest I've been to was that under attended Small Stone showcase in Boston a couple years back. Solace was pretty cool...

Incorrect. It was a year later in 2002. It wouldn't come to mind but for one of my Memories from SHoD3 in Dallas, roughly a month after the attacks. When SlowHorse took the stage Dan told the crowd "We're from New York City so please be nice." That's burned into my memory.

And if you think about it, if you're going to share a hotel room with two dudes you met on a message board dedicated to some broke dick sub sub sub genre of rock, it might as well be those two.

Did do SHoD in Arizona in 2006. That was a hell of a good time, even if the total audience number was slightly less than its median age.

Emissions Chicago was the weekend before 9/11, it was in Chicago. I can't imagine what that festival was like. it had a lot of the bands from the Emissions a few months prior, which was the best one of all, the first 3-day fest. '03 or '04 we started having 4-day fests. Europe would have been sweet this year, Desertfest followed by Roadburn two straight weekends, although these fests are very watered down compared to the ones we had in Youngstown.

Now that I think on it, you guys are right; it was 2002. I remember it being a mid-term election that Bush would end up sweeping and all the local AZ people were gung-ho for.

I was vacationing down there a week before the fest. Soaked up some sun, saw that Eyes Adrift band with Curt Kirkwood and Kris Noveselic and hung around the ASU campus. I liked that bar a lot. I bet you could still smoke in it. I remember the non-smoking thing was either a city or county ordinance, so you couldn't do it in Tempe, but you could in Mesa. I'd probably choke to death down there now.
