of all the cities, New London, CT? that is one random town. I actually saw a killer show there (Traindodge, Roma 79, Story of the Sea) a few years ago at the Oasis Pub, which is a small bar around the corner on Bank St. Going down to that show a few years ago from Boston, was my first time to New London. For some reason, I had this preconception...it was one of these seaport New England towns that had gone through a sort of cultural rebirth (like Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME). Nope. You go into that town, it's like walking back in time...say late 70s, or early 80s. The locals are dressed like they are pre-gaming for a Triumph/REO Speedwagon show. Dated scenery aside, the locals were actually very cool...and this town/region of CT seems to take a lot a pride in their local music scene. Also, prior to the show at the Oasis Pub, my brother in law and I had good wings and burgers at another local joint called Hot Rod Cafe (http://www.hotrodscafenewlondon.com
), also on Bank St. I'd also add The Oasis pub is a cool small divey bar, with a nice variety of tap beers...and a really impressive live sound quality for the bands, especially for such a small low key place. Traindodge, Roma 79, and Story of the Sea...all mid-west and west coast bands, all played terrific sets. What turned out to be a completely unexpected venture a few years ago, turned out to be one of the funnest nights out I've had living in New England for the past 11 years. If I wasn't going to be on Cape Cod labor day weekend, I'd probably go down for this doom fest. for at least a day.
