Hadn't heard that until just now...that is definitely sad. Knew he was battling it and that it had taken a turn for the worse but was hoping that he would recover.

RIP.

This is great! They're limiting it to $20 or $100, so I wonder how popular it'll end up being? From my experience, most Yahoo players are at a real penny-ante level of financial commitment.

A rake would be illegal for Yahoo. They might charge a small processing fee like PayPal does. I originally thought this might be a way of Yahoo establishing their own e-wallet type of system like PayPal, but I see they're actually utliziing PayPal for this.

I'm starting to get pumped. Future lines should be published this weekend or early next week. Heading to Vegas next weekend, but too early for any action. I'll be back down there in early April, probably going to hit Opening Day at Minute Maid Park this year. That's the plan at least for now.

RIP Gary Carter.

Wakefield retired, Burnett's heading to the Pirates for $13 mil and two minor league prospects (Diego Moreno being one of them), and Okajima failed his physical. A good day for the AL East's ERA!

That Burnett deal took forever to go through. There aren't too many teams where throwing Burnett in at the front of the rotation would improve the team, but Pittsburgh is one of the few teams that improves from bringing him. And at $6.5 a season its at an understandable price. Pitching in the NL at a more pitcher friendly ball park should help him out.

I just read the Yanks might be able to sign Raul Ibanez for a cool million? If so, that's a great deal for them. I realize he's in decline but with his left handed power, he should do quite well at the new wind tunnel that is the right field at Yankee Stadium.

Bold prediction.

End of the day, wins are often a by product of a teams production and he will be pitching for the Pirates. 13 wins....obtainable but there will be a challenge there for him.I don't think any Pirates pitchers got 13 wins for them last season?

I'd assume that Burnett has the best raw stuff but Pittsburgh's 2011 staff had a handful of pitchers that were better pitchers than AJ Burnett in 2011. Plus, the team played over their heads and gave their pitchers their greatest shot at accumulating wins in years. With that combo I think I saw their pitcher with the highest win total was still 12 and he wasn't even their best pitcher, just luckiest.

Burnett getting 13 wins is not going to be simple. Plus, he hasn't managed 13 wins, despite playing for the Yanks, since 2009. Not saying he can't...

that pittsburgh team could open some eyes even more this year. they very well could finish third in the division behind st loius and cincy. and they might get lucky and beat out one of those teams. someone will have to get the wins

The Yankees press release on the Burnett trade is a fun read.

Quote:
The New York Yankees today announced they have traded right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett and cash considerations to Pittsburgh in exchange for minor leaguers RHP Diego Moreno and OF Exicardo Cayones.

Moreno, 25, combined to make 41 relief appearances with Single-A Bradenton and Double-A Altoona in 2011, going 2-4 with a 3.63 ERA (44.2IP, 18ER). He struck out 45 batters and held opponents to a .218 (36-for-165) batting average. In five minor league seasons (2007-11), he has combined to strike out 212 batters in 194.0 innings pitched over 116 games (six starts). A native of Higuerote, Venezuela, Moreno was signed by the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent on August 21, 2006.

Cayones, 20, was signed as a non-drafted free agent on July 4, 2008, out of Valencia, Venezuela. In three minor league seasons, he has batted .272 (128-for-471) with 34 doubles, seven triples, one home run and 68 RBI in 149 games, appearing at all three outfield positions. He split the 2011 season between the GCL Pirates and short-season Single-A State College, combining to hit .228 (26-for-114) in 38 games.

Burnett, 35, was signed by the Yankees as a free agent on December 18, 2008, to a five-year contract. In his three seasons with the club, he went 34-35 with a 4.79 ERA (584.0IP, 311ER) in 99 games (98 starts). His 58 wild pitches recorded during his three-year stint with the Yankees (2009-11) were the most for any Major League pitcher over a three-season span since Tony Cloninger threw 62 wild pitches from 1964 through 1966, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

He posted an 11-11 record with a 5.15 ERA (190.1IP, 109ER) in 33 appearances (32GS) with the Yankees in 2011, setting career-highs in home runs allowed (31) and tying a career-high in earned runs allowed, while ranking first with a franchise-record 25 wild pitches – the most by any Major League pitcher in a single season since the start of the 2000s and the fifth most since 1900.

Las Vegas Hilton comes thru with the first 2012 win over/unders.

2012 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL REGULAR SEASON WINS
Team Win Total
ANGELS 92.5
A'S 71
ASTROS 64
BLUE JAYS 80
BRAVES 87
BREWERS 83.5
CARDINALS 83
CUBS 74.5
DIAMONDBACKS 86
DODGERS 81
GIANTS 87.5
INDIANS 78.5
MARINERS 72
MARLINS 84.5
METS 70.5
NATIONALS 84.5
ORIOLES 69.5
PADRES 73.5
PHILLIES 93.5
PIRATES 73
RANGERS 91.5
RAYS 87
RED SOX 89.5
REDS 86.5
ROCKIES 80.5
ROYALS 80.5
TIGERS 92.5
TWINS 73
WHITE SOX 74
YANKEES 93.5

So the biggest variances from 2011 is thinking the Marlins increase their win total 12-13 and the Brewers drop 12-13 wins. The Brewers number seems way low, even with a potential Braun suspension. The left side of their infield is improved offensively with signing Ramirez and Gonzalez, they still have one of the toughest rotations in MLB, two legit closers at the back-end of their bullpen and they still play in a weak division. I can see them falling in the upper-80's, especially if they can weather the Braun suspension and Gamel and Aoki pan out for them.

KC is picked once again to finish with a .500 record, which never come thru in all the years I've been following this. Is this the year it finally happens?

Twins are picked to increase by 10 wins, which I'm down with. I really liked the pickup of Doumit to DH and if Mauer, Span and Morneau, they'll definitely fall closer to 80 wins than 60 wins.

This is unprecedented. Ryan Braun won the appeal and will not be suspended

He won because someone forgot FedEx's hours, not because of incorrect testing results. Winning on a technicality isn't going to do much to clear the cloud of suspicion around him. Hell, he didn't even contest that the results were wrong!

Anyway, Oswalt's sitting the season out for now in the hopes that someone gets injured before midseason.

Crappy way to win the fight but it was the right decision. If the players have to follow protocol, so does major league baseball.

What did Oswalt expect? He's asking for ton of money and only willing to pitch for teams that already have a full rotation.

Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio reports that Ryan Zimmerman will earn $100 million with his new six-year extension.
Bowden also says he'll get the no-trade clause he was looking for. The new deal is added on to the end of his current contract, meaning he'll earn $126 million over the next eight years, with the Nationals holding an option for 2020 that could bring the deal to a total of $150 million. Interestingly, the guaranteed money is the exact same amount Jayson Werth signed for last offseason, though Werth's deal was for seven years. The third baseman is a career .288/.355/.479 hitter across seven seasons, all of which, of course, he has played for the Nationals.

Risky signing, given he seems to sporadically get injured, but I like it.

Definitely like this signing despite his nearly yearly trip to the DL. $15 million per year may be a little high, but he is still on the young side and he is now just entering his prime years so he has time to prove he is worth that much.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Cardinals and Yadier Molina are close to a five-year contract extension in the range of $70-75 million.
The new deal would put Molina in the range of $14-15 million per season, which would be the second-highest AAV (average annual value) ever for a catcher behind Joe Mauer's current deal. This contract would be wonderful news for fellow catchers Miguel Montero, Mike Napoli and Russell Martin, who are all scheduled to become free agents next offseason. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Monday afternoon that Molina's deal could be finalized by Friday.

Sorry, Heavy.

Good catcher but c'mon now, STL.

As one Molina retires and is on the path to expand his waistline even more, another Molina gets substantially fatter in the wallet.

The Cards can throw $75 million to this guy, but they couldn't pony a few extra million to keep Pujols?!?! Fucking insane.
